Abstract

The duality of testicular function is a well-understood phenomenon, but the multiplicity of factors which are involved in the control of these functions are less clearly delineated. Unquestionably we must recognize the anterior pituitary, through the mediation of its gonadotropic function, as being in the first rank of the influences which are concerned in the control of testicular activity. It seems likely that two hormones of the pituitary are involved in this control. One of these is concerned with the stimulation of spermatogenesis and seems, in the mammal at least, to be identical with the hormone that effects follicular growth in the ovary. The identity of the second hormone, which is involved in the stimulation of the interstitial cells and consequently with the production of male hormone, is less certain. Smith and his co-workers (1), and Hisaw and his collaborators (2) have presented evidence which would associate it with the...
