This paper presents a multimodal approach to alcoholism/ addiction treatment based on Lazarus' multimodal therapy, but modified in recognition of Maslow's work on self-actualized individuals. Such self-actualization is described as "spiritual actualization" since it includes the recovery behaviors suggested by the program of Alcoholics Anonymous. The paper presents a range of treatment modilities in accordance with Lazarus' BASIC-ID as modified to BASIC-ISs to include a spiritual component, the problems to be dealt with under each modality, and recommended treatment modalities suitable for each problem. This approach follows Dollard's recognition that a spiritual approach includes the full range of behaviors in relation to the individual, his relation with others, and his relation with some higher power. The paper suggests that belief in a traditional deity is unnecessary for the efficacy of such an approach The alcoholic/addict can utilize "act as if" theory which 1s one of the treatment modalities suggested.
