The single-crystal X-ray structure of the first nonlayered metal sulfonate has been determined. Barium 2-pyridylethanesulfonate forms a one-dimensional framework with a backbone of SO3- and H2O-bridged Ba2+ columns. Pendant to these columns are 6-fold divergent organic groups that define hydrophobic channels (7.7 × 9.1 Å) and include guest ethyl acetate molecules. Thermal analysis results are also presented.
