The history of previous attempts to generate artificial dust clouds is reviewed and the technical difficulties are analysed. A new method is described, in which the dust is packed into a cake, of which the surface is then scraped off in a very thin layer into an air stream. Details are given of the construction and performance of a new mechanism based on this principle. Concentrations can be indefinitely kept constant within a range of ±20% and the mechanism is suitable for a large variety of fine dusts.
