TLDR

Non‑conventional phosphor host materials such as cryptands or zeolites are emerging alternatives to traditional inorganic solid‑state materials used in fluorescent lamps, TVs, sets, and X‑ray detectors. The review examines recent optimization of conventional phosphors and looks forward to new‑generation materials that could extend the physical limits of luminescence. The authors review recent optimization efforts of conventional phosphors and discuss prospective new‑generation materials. A magnified image of the phosphor host materials is shown.

Abstract

Review: Non‐conventional phosphor host materials such as cryptands (see Figure) or zeolites now offer potential alternatives to the traditional inorganic solid‐state materials which find applications in e.g. fluorescent lamps, T.V. sets, or X‐ray detectors. Recent efforts to further optimize conventional materials are reviewed and a forward look is taken at the new‐generation materials which could further extend the physical limits of luminescence. magnified image
