Heartburn, but less so pharyngeal regurgitation, increases in prevalence and severity with gestational age and parity. We speculate that hormone-related impairment of distal oesophageal clearance mechanisms may have a crucial bearing on whether heartburn develops in those individuals at greatest risk.
