Abstract The lignin content of dried grasses can be measured, after prior removal of interfering phenolic materials, by dissolving the residue in 25% acetyl bromide in acetic acid and determining the absorption at 280 nm. The absorption values can also be used to predict the nutritive value of dried grasses, hays and silages.
