The fluorine n.m.r. spectra of SF 4 , [(CH 3 ) 2 CH] 2 NSF 3 , PF 5 :O(C 2 H 5 )2, SiF 5 − , SiF 5 :NH 3 − , and SiF 5 :HN(C 2 H 5 ) 2 − have been recorded after treatment of glassware and reagents with [(CH 3 ) 3 Si] 2 NH to remove H 2 O and HF impurities. A mechanism of intramolecular and intermolecular fluorine exchange, involving Lewis acid – Lewis base interaction and rapid equilibration of five and six coordinate geometries, is proposed.
