Abstract

This new book presents an informed and thoughtful assessment of the small farm scenario, descriptions of small farms and small farmers, and characterisation of mixed crop-animal systems which are so typical of Asian agriculture. It addresses opportunities for increasing productivity by using available information, improved natural resource management and productivity-enhancing technologies, highlights priority for the potentially important rainfed areas, and emphasises the multifunctional and potential contribution of animals. Additionally, the book underlines the need for urgent and assertive institutional involvement, interdisciplinary R and D that has a pro-poor orientation, policy elements and increased investments to stimulate productivity, food security and agricultural growth in Asia. These aspects are discussed in eight chapters in the book: 1. Introduction, 2. The relevance and potential of small farms, 3. Targeting rainfed environments, 4. Ownership and contribution of animals, 5. Development strategies, 6. Policy issues, 7. Application of systems methodologies, and 8. Conclusions. The discussions and the way forward are important and timely in the face of waning agriculture. The book has a useful reference list, index, a glossary, and 30 colour plates. The book will be of wide interest to students, teachers, researchers, practitioners, extension personnel, development agents, environmentalists, policy makers and planners involved with agriculture.
