The absorption of metallic selenium is compared with that of the vitreous form in the region from 200 A to 240 A. For these two forms of selenium and for tellurium, the absorption band is separated into two component bands. This has led to a revised estimate of 1.2 ev for the separation of the ${M}_{\mathrm{IV}}$ and ${M}_{\mathrm{V}}$ levels of selenium and 1.6 ev for the separation of the ${N}_{\mathrm{IV}}$ and ${N}_{\mathrm{V}}$ levels of tellurium.
