Simple episcleritis is a very variable condition, especially in the severity and duration of individual attacks which may be acute and short, apparently responding very rapidly to drug therapy, or may proceed to a chronic or repeatedly recurrent condition. Nodular episcleritis follows a similar but more prolonged course.
