The standard enthalpies of formation of salt-like lanthanide dichlorides involving M2+ ions with [Xe]4fn+1 configurations are interpolated with the aid of a simple ionic-crystal model and auxiliary thermodynamic data. The estimated feasibilities of the disproportionation processes are shown to correlate closely with the ionization potential of the M2+ ions, and are in good agreement with chemical observations.
