Abstract

Abstract Simple interatomic force models are used to calculate shear and tensile strengths by straightforward summation with a computer. Crystal structures corresponding to ionic, covalent, and van der Waals bonding are examined, and stress-strain curves predicted. The highest strengths both in shear and tension are found with covalent bonding.
