Abstract Using the experimental method of fiber degeneration the fibers crossing the midline in the supra‐optic decussations were differentiated. The fibers of the supra‐optic decussations proved to be decussating fibers arising in the reticular formation of the pons and the midbrain and commissural fibers of the superior colliculus and of the globus pallidus. The longest fibers arise in the spinal cord. A topographical arrangement of all fibers, according to their place of origin or according to the place where they join the tract was found. The function of the majority of the supra‐optic fibers could be described in terms of the reticular formation of the cranial part of the brainstem.
