Hybrid integration of a laser diode with a planarsilica waveguide

Abstract

A novel technique is reported for automatically aligning a laser diode chip to a singlemode planar silica waveguide on a silicon motherboard. The technique involves only a minor modifcation to a standard laser. A loss of −14dB was measured; the sources of this loss are analysed.
