Abstract

results given in the Proc.R.S. Edin.1912-13, with reference to the loss of energy consequent on oblique impact of two confined streams. His work on Water Hammer is also well known, and as here set forth will, like many another set of sections in the book, be of interest to the practical engineer as well as to the student. The amount of new material in this edition is so considerable that, taking into account the general revision, the rearrangements and the excisions, the volume may almost be said to be a new book.New sections have been added on waves of transmission and oscillation, on ripples, on the flow of fluids other than water, on the admixture of adjacent layers of fluid in pipes, and on the suction effect between passing ships. The application of Hydraulics to the design of Machinery is handled in nine chapters, covering more than half the book. The whole is now well up to date, and may be relied upon as a thoroughly adequate treatment of the subject.
