A critical assessment of current practices used for conductance cell calibrations is reported, based on textbooks, research publications, and a questionnaire to update ongoing practice. Techniques used in aqueous and nonaqueous systems at ambient temperature, together with high temperature applications, are considered. It is apparent from this survey that the Jones and Bradshaw demal values are widely used as standard points for cell calibration. In the past decade several fitting equations based on the demal standards have been advanced and can be used to good advantage. The practices for molten salt conductance cells are similarly considered, and some points for further study are noted.
