A study was made of the epiphysial cartilage and osteoblasts of the tibia in rats having a single exposure of x irradiation of increasing intensities from 400 to 1800 r administered from 1 to 10 days before sacrifice. Prompt damage to the cartilage was evidenced by cessation of growth and alterations in certain histochemical reactions. In contrast, stimulation of osteoblastic activity, i.e., proliferation with excessive matrix production, was found. (auth)
