Abstract The article presents the numerical model and computational evaluation of cutting tool insert for passive cooling technique, which reduces the temperature of the insert during dry machining. The technique developed uses heat sink materials for extracting the thermal load of the cutting tool insert indirectly. The developed technique is not affecting the actual machining process. The computational model developed is validated with the experimental data. Also, by using validated computational models, temperatures at the tip of the cutting tool inserts are predicted. The scanning electron microscope photographs reveal that the bonding of work material to the rake surface is considerably reduced for the passive cooling technique.
