Experimental measurements are reported of optical gain due to stimulated transitions between the lowest-bound diatomic states of xenon (Xe) and the repulsive ground state. The optical gain was greatest at a wavelength of (1730 ± 10) Å, where the effective gain cross section is estimated to be <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">7 \times 10^{19}</tex> cm 2 .
