Abstract

and Martzlofflv gave evidence that invasive cervical cancer arose in a field of "surface carcinoma," (carcinoma in situ, preinvasive carcinoma, intraepithelial carcinoma). At the time, this was a revolutionary concept. Prior to these observations, there was a common acceptance of the idea that the early form of invasive cancer was a miniature of advanced cancer, i.e., a small cancer node in the stroma grew into the advanced form of invasive cancer.40
