For pt.I see ibid., vol.19, p.5121 (1986). The authors describe the first calorimetric measurements of the entropy of an intercalation compound. A lattice gas model of intercalation describes the variation of ( delta s/ delta x)T with x in LixMo6Se8 for x<or=1 at fixed temperature T with no adjustable parameters. For x>1, ( delta s/ delta x)T shows features associated with phase transitions, and the shape of these features distinguishes continuous transitions from first-order transitions.
