The authors examine the problems involved in the application of the Maxwell stress equations for finite-element force calculations on magnetised ferrous cores. They also study the effect of the tangential magnetic field strength H/sub t/ on the accuracy of the force calculation. An effective H/sub t/ value is presented that is based on the H/sub t/ values predicted on either side of an iron/air boundary. The effects of iron saturation, mesh discretisation, and solver type on the accuracy of the tangential force calculation are considered.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
