Presenting an audible indication of subjects' electroencephalographic alpha activity under conditions of dim ambient illumination led to systematic increases in alpha density, while in total darkness the same procedure did not. These results support the view that feedback training can be clearly demonstrated only when factors leading to a suppression of alpha activity are present in the environment.
