Abstract

This paper presents the analyzed results of stability enhancement of a grid-connected offshore wind farm (OWF) using a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) unit. The fuzzy damping controllers of the proposed SMES unit are designed by using fuzzy control theory to contribute effective damping to the studied 80-MW OWF based on doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) under various disturbance conditions. The simulated results show that the proposed SMES unit joined with the designed fuzzy damping controllers can effectively stabilize the studied OWF under a severe disturbance. The inherent fluctuations of the injected active power delivered to the power grid can also be simultaneously mitigated by the proposed control scheme.
