TLDR

The book reviews smart materials—piezoelectric, shape memory alloys, electrorheological/magnetorheological fluids, fiber optics, and biomimetics—detailing how their properties can be tuned by external parameters. It presents constitutive equations modeling the behavior of these smart materials.

Abstract

A V Srinivasan and D Michael McFarland have written a valuable book on design and analysis of smart structures. The book summarizes the operating principles of materials whose properties can be varied by changing an external parameter. The materials reviewed in this book are: Piezoelectric Materials, Shape Memory Alloys and Electrorheological and Magnetorheological Fluids. It also discusses fibre optics and biomimetics. In addition, it provides constitutive equations that describe the behaviour.
