Abstract The effect of stanniectomy on the net influx of calcium 45 across the gill membrane was investigated using an isolated individual gill perfusion preparation. Two weeks post‐operatively the gills from stanniectomized eels displayed a considerably higher net calcium uptake relative to the gills from mock‐operated eels. This finding supports the suggestion that the characteristic hypercalcemic response to stanniectomy is due, at least in part, to an increase in branchial calcium uptake.
