Selective lumbar catheter venography is a new radiological method that we have found valuable in more than 500 examinations. For the diagnosis of vertebral disease such as lumbar disc prolapse and of retroperitoneal tumours and metastases to lymph nodes and lumbar vertebrae, this method provides better visualization of the lumbar vertebral veins than osseous venography. Combined retroperitoneal venography and lower cavography is a valuable addition to other radiological methods which assist in the choice of surgery and in arriving at a prognosis.
