Abstract

The routine measurement of pleural fluid amylase levels is neither clinically indicated nor cost-effective. We suggest that pleural fluid serum amylase levels be measured only if there is a pretest suspicion of acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatic disease, or esophageal rupture.
