Theory of the Phase Transition between the Intra β-Structure and the Random Coil in Polyamino Chains

Abstract

The transition between the intra β-structure and the random coil of a polyamino chain is discussed. By making use of a propagator method, the partition function is calculated for chain consisting of Gaussian chain portions and β-structure portions. In our model, there exists a transition point. This β-coil transition may be explained as the transition between a system of one-dimensional sequence and a system of two-dimensional sequence.
