Abstract

1. Salmonella heidelberg , chilled from 37 to 5°C in glucose‐salts broth, grew better on a simple medium (glucose‐salts agar) than on a complex medium (Tryptic Soy Agar + 0·5% yeast extract). 2. The organisms recovered the ability to grow on the complex medium after a further 8 h incubation at 5°C. 3. RNA synthesis would appear to be a critical factor in the recovery process.
