Abstract The synthesis and design optimization of a series of new redox‐reponsive ligands built around the tetrathiafulvalene electroactive core and incorporating two to four pendant polyether binding sites are described. A comparative study of the recognition properties of these podand‐TTFs forlead( II ) has been carried out by cyclic voltammetry. The design optimization produced a ligand ( 1c ) that exhibits a remarkably high affinity for lead( II ), as shown by electronic absorption spectroscopy, 1 H NMR titration studies and cyclic voltammetry.
