Abstract The orientation and temperature dependence of slip in AgMg single crystals has been investigated in compression in the temperature range 4′2–770 K. At temperatures below about 420 K, slip occurs along ⟨111⟩ directions, regardless of crystal orientation. On the other hand, at and above 450 K both ⟨111⟩ and ⟨001⟩-type slip are found to be operative depending on crystal orientation. The critical resolved shear stress for the ⟨001⟩-type slip is found to decrease rapidly with increasing temperature in the range 450–570 K, while that for the ⟨111⟩-type slip is almost independent of temperature in this range. The occurrence of the ⟨001⟩-type slip in such a high temperature range is interpreted in terms of the difference in the temperature dependence of the critical resolved shear stress between the two types of slip.
