The effect of temperature, density and magnetic field gradients on ion acoustic instability in perpendicular collisionless shocks is investigated. For typical experimental conditions, the temperature gradient increases the growth rate by as much as an order of magnitude, the other gradients having negligible effect. It is shown that this increase is due to a distortion of the steady-state electron distribution function.
