Phenolic Content in Roots of Some Solanaceae and Its Influence On Iaa-Oxidase Activity as an Indicator of Resistance To Heterodera Rostochiensis

Ethanol extracts from roots of 21 species of Solanaceae were prepared. The quantities of total phenols, mono- and polyphenols in the extracts were determined and the ratio of mono- to polyphenols in them was calculated. The influence of root extracts on the activity of peroxidase (as IAA-oxidase) was tested in vitro. Root extracts from good hosts of Heterodera rostochiensis, i.e. plants more or less susceptible to this nematode, were characterized by a low ratio of mono- to polyphenols (0.5-3.1) and they strongly inhibited the enzymatic destruction of IAA. Root extracts of non-hosts of H. rostochiensis, i.e. plants resistant to this nematode, showed a high ratio of mono- to polyphenols (3.4-9.3) and they did not inhibit (or very slightly inhibited) IAA destruction. The real influence of extracts containing phenolic compounds appeared after their hydrolysis.
