Abstract

In certain circumstances oral hypoglycaemic drugs of the sulphonylurea group may cause severe and sometimes fatal hypoglycaemia. Five illustrative cases -four fatal and four in patients with renal failure -are described in mild diabetics on.glibenclamide, a drug which is widely used and often erroneously thought to be safe in the presence of impaired renal function. Recent literature has not adequately drawn attention to the dangers of glibenclamide though these are clearly set out in the maker's data sheet for DaoniP.
