Abstract

Abstract Laterite soils derived from the basement complex and sedimentary areas of southwestern Nigeria are compacted at the energy of the standard Proctor. The compacted laterite soils possess unsoaked and soaked California bearing ratio values that make them adequate for use as sub-base materials. Their shear strengths are quite high under total and effective stress conditions and thus with their acceptable permeability level the soils are suitable for use in the construction of embankments and dams.
