The Organic−Mineral Interface in Bone Is Predominantly Polysaccharide

Abstract

By identifying the carbon atoms in close proximity to the mineral suface in bone, solid-state NMR shows that the vital interface between it and the organic matrix is principally polysaccharide and not protein. The discovery has implications for bone health and design of osteomimetic materials.
