Abstract

Chronically hypoxic HeLa cells were exposed to californium and radium sources for up to twelve hours. In this system of hypoxic cells, oxygen is removed by the respiratory activity of an excess of heavily irradiated “feeder” cells. Using cultures with alcohol-killed “feeder” cells as oxygenated controls, an OER of 2.53 was obtained for radium irradiation, and an OER of 1.62 was obtained for irradiation with neutrons from californium sources. Various considerations in evaluating radiobiological factors are discussed.
