Somatomedin A, which stimulates the incorporation of sulfate into chicken cartilage has been purified from human plasma. The purified somatomedin A showed specific binding to human placenta membranes and a radioreceptor assay was developed for somatomedin A. Using this assay the mean level of somatomedin A in acromegalic sera is six times higher than in sera from patients with growth hormone deficiency.
