Abstract Professor Mollat's latest book concludes fourteen years of research into the problems of medieval poverty, conducted by himself and his collaborators. They formed a very active working group at the Sorbonne from 1962 to 1976 which produced ninety seminar papers and two hundred and twenty longer treatises, to say nothing of the theses, all concerned with differents aspects of medieval poverty. Summaries of these studies were published in mimeograph as the ‘Cahiers de Recherches sur l'histoire de la Pauvretè I—X, Paris 1962—1977’. and a selection of articles has appeared in a book under Professor Mollar's direction (Etudes sur l'bistoire de la Pauvretè, 2 vols., (Paris, 1974)). Whereas the ‘Cahiers’ and the Etudes could be considered as case studies, the present book offers a synthesis of this and other research work.
