A mechanical lithotripter of simple and robust design is described. With the aid of this device it proves possible to crush common bile duct and intrahepatic calculi that are otherwise too large to pass out spontaneously after papillotomy, or are inaccessible to other means of treatment. To date it has been used with success in 5 patients.
