Abstract As part of a larger study conducted at the Oro‐Facial Pain Clinic, Department of Dental Medicine and Surgery, University of Melbourne, 130 patients with dental phobias and 368 patients with chronic orofacial pain were compared for psychological and social variables. Pain patients showed a greater burden of psychiatric disorders and were more likely to be older, married, have children, be migrants, be less educated, have poorer jobs and be more financially disadvantaged than phobic patients.
