Spontaneous Formation of Quasi-Book-shelf Layer Structure in New Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals Derived from a Naphthalene Ring

Abstract We have studied ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures of naphthalene and phenyl pyrimidine derivatives, and found that the layer structure can be controlled by changing mixture ratios. By decreasing temperature, a bookshelf layer structure with the optical tilt angle of 5° is realized spontaneously in a mixture containing 40 wt% naphthalene derivative.
