During the past two decades, significant advances have been made in understanding clinical disorders with disturbed bone and mineral metabolism. This understanding has been a result of fundamental advances in both basic and applied knowledge. Urist and his distinguished colleagues have made a worthwhile contribution in recording many of these recent advances in this book on bone and mineral physiology. The book is for the serious student of bone and its diseases, and not for the beginner. There is some repetition and some unexplained omissions for a text with this title. For instance, phosphate metabolism is covered in a separate chapter, but no such prominence is given to calcium. While new advances in vitamin D are covered thoroughly, there is no such concentrated coverage of either parathyroid hormone or calcitonin. While this is not primarily a clinical textbook, a greater attempt to correlate basic bone and mineral physiology with clinical
