Abstract Vinylogous series of carotenoic acids and the corresponding esters have been synthesized from the B‐apo‐carotenals by the W ITTIG reaction. By comparison with the synthetic material the structure of torularhodin from torula yeast was shown to be that of 3′, 4′‐dehydro‐18′‐y‐carotenoic acid.
