Due to limitations of space, many of the details given in the original papers are necessarily omitted. Some of the photo micrographs originally published in black and white are shown here in color. In numerous epidemiologic and his tologic studies, it has been found that the harmful effects of cigarette smok ing increase with increasing dosage. Thus, if tar and nicotine are largely responsible for the damage, it may be postulated that reducing tar and nico tine by means of a filter will reduce the degree of damage produced by smoking any specified number of ciga rettes. The present study was under taken to test this hypothesis experi mentally.
