Abstract. The haemodynamic responses to sustained handgrip were studied in 15 hypertensive patients. The response pattern was found to be similar to that in normotensive subjects, and was characterized by marked increase in systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure, moderate increase in heart rate and cardiac output, and no change in central venous pressure, stroke volume or total peripheral resistance. Mean arterial blood pressure was found to be higher in our patients than it is in normotensive subjects during static muscular contraction, and higher than it is in hypertensive subjects during dynamic exercise.
