ON rare occasions during the latter part of pregnancy, jaundice that is not related to primary liver disease, biliary-tract disease or hemolytic jaundice develops. The cause is not known. The jaundice occurs only with pregnancy, clears rapidly after delivery and tends to recur with subsequent pregnancies. Pruritus is usually a prominent feature, but symptoms are otherwise minimal. The health of the patient does not deteriorate, and the pregnancy is usually uncomplicated. The incidence of premature delivery, however, may be higher than normal. The laboratory studies are consistent with an obstructive jaundice. Liver biopsy reveals bile stasis in the bile canaliculi. . . .
