Abstract The new compounds Ca 9 Mn 4 Bi 9 and Ca 9 Zn 4 Bi 9 crystallize in the orthorhombic system (Pbam) with Ca 9 Mn 4 Bi 9 : a = 2242 ± 2 pm, b = 1256 ± 1 pm, c = 472 ± 1 pm, Ca 9 Zn 4 Bi 9 : a = 2212 ± 2 pm, b = 1264 ± 1 pm, c = 465 ± 1 pm. In the structure of the isotypic compounds there are Mn(Zn)Bi 4 -tetrahedra connected to chains by common corners. Four of these chains are connected by common comers to „Einervierfachketten“ in Liebau’s nomenclature for inosilicates.
